Now that the LA Marathon is over my focus until the end of May is triathlon training.  I have never done a triathlon before and if you frequently read InsaneMarathon.com you know that I jumped right into the sport of triathlon last month.

Swim training has been going good.  I have been averaging 2x a week swim instruction + 2 times a week self instruction/swimming laps.  Every time I am in the water I complete a minimum of 1500m - although I stop for breaks.  It's not that I get tired while swimming it is the fact that I am still not 100% comfortable breathing under the water.  My body does not like the fact that when I exhale my face is in the water. That creates a situation where I don't exhale enough, therefore I don't inhale enough.  Which compounds until I need to stop and regroup my breathing.  My focus from here on out is going to be improving my breathing.

Tomorrow, April 6, I will be jumping into the open water for the first time at a mock triathlon being held by a local running store, American Running Company.  It will be a .25 mile swim, 10 mile bike and a 5k run. This should allow me to feel what a triathlon will be like on race day, practice transitions and really get the feel for my Olympic distance event (St. Anthony's).  I will also be doing the Escape from Fort DeSoto sprint triathlon on April 13 as a tune up.  I really need to get myself into the sport completely and see how it goes.  I want to do well at St. Anthony's and IronMan Florida 70.3.

Spin classes have been my only training so far on the bike.  Averaging around 25-30 miles a class.
I bought aero bars, new pedals and new tires for my road bike and then went out for a challenging ride in Clearwater Beach over the bridges. Sadly I experienced my first fall due to the clip in pedals.  Luckily It was only a scrape on my knee (and ego).  It's time to get serious!!

The past weekend I was in Las Vegas NV. I was able to practice my swimming early in the morning at the hotel lap pool... I also ran a 1/2 marathon in Laughlin, NV on Saturday morning.  It was a fun 13.1 miles along the Colorado River in the desert.  I love signing up for local races when I am traveling!

I will be doing all my triathlon training while still completing the INSANITY: The Asylum 30 day fitness challenge with you!  Remember registration closes for the fitness challenge at 11:59pm tomorrow!  The program starts on April 15.  I can't wait!

Use this direct link to get the challenge pack for ASYLUM - as soon as you order the program I will e-mail you with information on how to get involved with our support group!

The Los Angeles Marathon was great.  I couldn't have asked for better weather, a more entertaining course or a better group to travel with.  There is one thing I did learn in LA though, it doesn't matter how hard you train or how much sleep you get -- if your body doesn't agree with something its going to hold you back from your goals.

Sadly, my body does not agree with GU gels anymore.  I have used them to fuel for marathons since I started running them in 2008. Although there have been times when my stomach did not agree with them after the race, nothing has ever made me stop at the restroom until the past year.  At first I though it was just a fluke. Now I know I need to switch up my nutrition during full marathons.

I was right on track for my 3:45 marathon until mile 16 when I HAD to stop for a restroom.  It was disappointing.  There was nothing I could do about it.  It killed my time.  I will not have that happen again.

Some of the products I plan to try and use to replace GU include Hammer Gel and Honey Stinger Organic Gel.  I am also going to use the Honey Stinger Waffle while fueling on my bike for my upcoming triathlon races.

Let me know in the comments if you have had any experience with gels/nutrition during your training.

Hopefully it helps!!

Don't forget -- if you wanted to join myself and others for a 30 day INSANITY: The ASYLUM fitness challenge - fill out an interest form and I will get back to you ASAP.  Registration closes April 6 at 11:59pm!

I can't believe this week will be my final 20 miler before the NYC marathon!  Training is definitely in full force - and the taper the next 3 weeks sounds amazing!

Since my last post I have completed two big races: The Disney Tower of Terror 10 mile run & the Jacksonville Marine Corps 1/2 marathon. It was great to have the race day experience and run my long run 'faster' than my typical Saturday morning long run. However, because my body hates running in the heat and humidity (yes, I know I live in Florida!) my speed suffered.

The inaugural Disney Tower of Terror 10 mile run was awesome despite the humidity. I stayed at one of the Disney resorts & was transported to the start line in a fancy coach bus. I started off the run with some friends & pounded out the 10 miles so that I could enjoy the rest of the evening at the Hollywood Studios theme park. There is nothing quite like running a hot & humid 10 mile race and then jumping on the Tower of Terror and Aerosmith's Rock & Roller Coaster!  The park was open until 3am - the race started at 10pm. The medal was awesome. Disney races are always 1st class. I am looking forward to attending Disney Marathon weekend.

The Jacksonville Marine Corps marathon was a great time too. I ran the Jacksonville Marine Corps 1/2 last year and enjoyed the course & organization. I had some friends running it this year & it just happened to be the same weekend of the Chicago Bears vs. Jacksonville Jaguars game.  It was nice to run the same course 2 years in a row. The only downside was this year it was A LOT hotter than last year. One of the best parts about running in Jacksonville normally is that it usually is around 10 degrees cooler in Jacksonville than Tampa this time of the year.  That was not the case this weekend. I ended up being right around the same finish time last year, but with the warmer weather I was happy with my result. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone looking for an early fall 1/2 in Florida.

INSANITY training is still going as planned. Every week getting in my INSANITY workouts coupled with running. Yesterday I finished Max Cardio Conditioning & Cardio Abs. Today I completed Max Cardio Circuit. Tomorrow I will be running 8 miles! The training never ends!

This week a new INSANITY program is being released - Thursday, October 11 in the late afternoon log onto InsaneMarathon.com or teambeachbody.com/jimblake and order INSANITY: The Asylum VOLUME 2! If you are too scared to try Volume 2 - Volume 1 is available NOW!

Let me know how your training is going. Keep digging deep! It's time for me to run along...

INSANITY marathon training is on track.  This past week I was able to get in 3 INSANITY workouts (Max Cardio Conditioning, Max Interval Circuit, ASYLUM: Strength).  This week I changed things up and added in some Insanity: The Asylum into training.  I felt like I needed some strength training and removed Core Cardio and Balance to allow Asylum: Strength.  It was definitely rough & I felt the muscle burn the next day. Results and Recovery formula always helps after a strength workout or any tough workout for that matter.  You should try it yourself! One of InsaneMarathon.com's facebook fans Nikki T. let me know her feedback using Results and Recovery "The Results & Recovery drink has a great taste. I used it on the 2nd day of double digit training runs & I feel it helped in my quicker recovery."

Running workouts for the week included a 9 mile run in Miami (5 treadmill 4 with the Brickell Run Club).  A 5k race and a 1 mile race on Saturday at the One Step Closer to the Cure 5k & 1 mile event in St. Petersburg.  Today I finished the Hooters 10k Classic race in Clearwater.

This coming week the milage ramps up with a 3 mile, 8 mile and 20 mile run.  3 MAX

I posted this on Facebook today and wanted to take a second and post in on here as well:
"Remember to always listen to your body. Stay within your limits. Slow down if you need to. Take more breaks if needed. Go to the doctor for preventative checkups. Just being active & trying your best is better than doing nothing at all. Stay healthy & stay safe."
Safety should always be your #1 priority.  If something doesn't feel right go with your instinct and slow down or stop.  Consult with your physician before starting any strenuous workout routine.

On Labor Day I ran the Oak Brook 1/2 Marathon as part of my INSANITY marathon training plan.  Like most marathon training plans, ours calls for a tune up race halfway though your marathon training.  Luckily there was a half marathon available while I was i at my marathon training halfway point!  I have raced many races in the Chicagoland area but I had never participated in the Oak Brook 1/2 before.  I imagined it as a flat, fast course.  I was wrong.  When the race started the temperature was hovering around 74 degrees.  At the finish it was right around 80.  Definitely a warm morning for Labor Day in Chicago.  I ran into some Marathon Maniacs at the start of the race (Heather Zeigler and Dave Mari to name a couple).  We took a quick group photo (see below) before running the 13.1 miles!

The Oak Brook 1/2 started right next to McDonalds corporate headquarters and ran mostly on local bike paths and crushed limestone trails.  It was a very hilly and tough course. I felt strong during the race, I did not PR.  For the conditions I kept the same time as I did for my last 1/2 marathon, which was on a really flat course at the Rock & Roll Chicago 1/2.  INSANITY has really helped me with hill training even though I don't run hills in Florida. I would recommend this race to seasoned runners looking for a challenging 1/2 marathon.  Beginners and 1st time 1/2 marathoners should look for a flat, fast, popular race to gain confidence and truly enjoy the 1/2 marathon experience.  If you would like some 1/2 marathon recommendations send me an e-mail or comment below!

About a month ago the INSANITY: The Asylum Facebook page was running a summer contest for its fans.  Every couple of days they would ask people to go out and perform one of the sports performance routines from the program (tennis, swimming, long jump, hurdles, etc). You were to take two photos of yourself doing the activity, the first photo while doing the DVD workout and the second performing the workout in 'real life' on the court, in the pool, etc.  I decided to compete in the contest and won the GOLD MEDAL for the tennis portion.  If you haven't tried INSANITY: The Asylum it is a great program to attempt after completing INSANITY.  It definitely pushes you harder and brings your performance to the next level.  Beachbody is going to be releasing Asylum Volume 2 shortly.  I can't wait to push myself through the next chapter of the ASYLUM!I

This weekend I have a 17 mile run scheduled.  The mileage is ramping up and the INSANITY workouts are getting more intense.  Welcome to the 2nd half of INSANITY MARATHON TRAINING!
